Bilingual phonological interaction: Cross-language process transfer in code-switching

چکیده

Bilinguals challenge the boundaries of languages’ distinct grammars – including their phonological systems and processes but impact code-switching on challenging these is not fully understood. The current study explores interaction between adult bilinguals’ two by investigating effects cross-language transfer processes. I investigate main questions: 1) Can a bilingual speaker cross-linguistically (promotion) or lack particular (inhibition) in context?; 2) Do code switches affect degree and/or frequency influences? To answer questions, examine /t/ → [ɾ] tapping process English /d/ [ð] spirantization Spanish. Data was collected from Miami Corpus (Bangor University). Results indicate that can contexts, transfers be realized through phonetically gradient and, occasionally, categorical effects. also indeed nature transfers. These results suggest motivate bilingual’s offer insight into systems’ boundaries.

Language switching in bilingual production

One key issue in bilingualism is how bilinguals control production, particularly to produce words in the less dominant language. Language switching is one method to investigate control processes. Language switching has been much studied in comprehension, e.g., in lexical decision task, but less so in production. Here we first present a study of language switching in Italian-English adult biling...

Cross-Language Frame Semantics Transfer in Bilingual Corpora

Recent work on the transfer of semantic information across languages has been recently applied to the development of resources annotated with Frame information for different non-English European languages. These works are based on the assumption that parallel corpora annotated for English can be used to transfer the semantic information to the other target languages. In this paper, a robust met...

Comprehension of Code-switching by Bilingual Infants

Bilingual children are regularly exposed to code-switching, a linguistic phenomenon consisting of mixing two languages within the same context (Byers-Heinlein, 2013a). Studies have demonstrated that adults are slower to process code-switched language (Grainger & O’regan, 1992), and preliminary studies testing intra-sentential switches (“Where is the chien?”) found similar results with toddlers ...

The Impact of Code-Switching on Bilingual EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension

This study sought to investigate the probable effects of code-switching (CS) on Iranian bilingual English learners' reading comprehension. In this study, two intact classes of freshmen, taking the four-credit Reading and Comprehension Course 1, comprising a total of 70 participants, with 35 in each class, were randomly assigned as the experimental and the control groups after their initial homo...

Bilingual Language Switching in Naming: Asymmetrical Costs of Language Selection

In an experimental study of language switching and selection, bilinguals named numerals in either their first or second language unpredictably. Response latencies (RTs) on switch trials (where the response language changed from the previous trial) were slower than on nonswitch trials. As predicted, the language-switching cost was consistently larger when switching to the dominant L1 from the we...
